Since 1983 United Nations delegates and staff have taken a moment from their busy schedules to express their hopes for world peace by participating in the Peace Walks

From the NY Daily News:

“REPRESENTATIVES of Egypt and Fiji carry copy of preamble to United Nations charter during eighth annual Peace Walk In UN rose garden yesterday,on the 45th anniversary of its signing in San Francisco. The symbolic relay for peace continues today.”

Remarks BY MR. LOVELL FLANDERS PRESIDENT , UNITED NATIONS STAFF UNION

It is always nice to be with you and to share these moments. There are so many things happening in the world right now, involving trends and conditions that seem to be transforming the world very rapidly, hopefully to a more peaceful state than we have seen in the past . With the breaking down of the Berlin Wall and so many other movements in Eastern Europe and elsewhere, you begin to wonder what it is in the consciousness of human beings that is making this transformation possible. It may vary well be the effort of people like yourself – simply through meditation, prayer and inspirational activities — that are transforming the psyche of the human being, and having an impact in the way leaders are approaching the problems that we face in the world.

I hope this is true, and continue. to be true. I hope that through activities such as these symbolic marches trying to promote peace and international unity, our future will be one of peace and development for all of mankind. I hope that we will be unified in these kind. of ways., rather than having a future more dramatic or devastating, with the kind of world that any of you. who grew up right after the war have had to live with. In fact, I was thinking the other day that this is probably one of the first times in my own personal history when the specter of nuclear holocaust is farther away than perhaps it has ever, ever been, and when one can begin to think that maybe there is a future, there is hope for humankind. As I said before, if this is true, I am sure it is through efforts such as yours that it will be possible.

Also, we must not forget, as you are not forgetting •• that the United Nations has an important place in that whole structure of peace. But we in the United Nations, I think, need an internal transformation of our own spirit.. We need a transformation of spirit within the administration. We had some huge demonstrations of staff over the last few months that talked about “One UN, one Staff.” This that you are doing is a manifestation of that, I believe. Also, the demonstrations talked about the apartheid system for staff that we have at the UN. I think we have to break this down — as well as the internal bitterness that exist within the UN – through our prayers and meditation. and our spirit. There are tremendous transformations going on in the world, and we in the UN have to transform ourselves, I believe, in the same way. We have to have that transformation, and I look to all of you to help with that. I am sure that collectively we can do this, through our love for the UN and our love for each other. Thank you very much.

SRI CHINMOY: The Peace Meditation at the United Nations

GENERAL Introduction for PEACE WALKS AT THE UNITED NATIONS

Peace Walks are organised under the co-sponsorship of Sri Chinmoy: The Peace Meditation at the United Nations and a number of Permanent Representatives to the United Nations on United Nations Charter Day (26 June) and United Nations Day (24 October).

During these two-day events, nationals of the United Nations Member States walk around a particular section of the U.N. Garden, each country following the other in relay fashion. They carry a copy of the Preamble to the U. N. Charter, in eloquent testimonial to the universal desire for peace. All participants sign a copy of the Preamble.

Also, on the first day of the General Assembly, a contemplative early-morning seven-mile walk for peace begins and ends at V.N. headquarters
