1987 Press Conference at UN Hotel Announces Oneness – Home World Peace Run

Sri Chinmoy, Members of the Peace Meditation at the UN, media corespondents and other guests attended a New York press conference on 03 Feb 1997 to announce the kick off the “Oneness – Home” world Peace Run

Among the celebrities supporting this initiative and attending the New York press conference Feb. 3 were:

  • Olympic Gold Medalist, Sudhahota (Carl Lewis),
  • E-Street band saxophonist, Mokshagun (Clarence Clemons) and
  • Grammy Award winner, Narada (Michael Walden)

The event took place at the UN Plaza Hotel.

The events organizer and first Executive Director, Shambhu N. Vineberg,  is a former U.N. Children’s Fund (UNICEF) staff member.

  • History Continuity – early national and regional runs: Since the mid 1970′s Sri Chinmoy encouraged national and regional runs in support of the highest ideals of the international community. It was at the UN that the first big Global Relay Run and related events for Peace and Harmony was planned. Since then it has taken place in over 140 countries.
